Open The Gate - Watch The Catcher, Not the Ball
Demonstration of several plate umpire mechanics:
  • Mask Removal
  • Opening the gate to let the catcher through
  • Following the catcher, not the ball, on fouls balls in the vicinity of home plate and behind you
  • Inspecting any balls that come back into play
  • Giving the count
  • Putting the ball back into play
  • Slot stance: heel to toe/heel to toe

A Position - Throw Coming From Second Base - Casual Safe Call
Demonstration of mechanic for throw coming from second base to first - casual safe call
  • On throws coming from the right side, Umpire in A position only needs to move in about two steps from foul line
  • Note pause before the call
  • Casual signal is only thing required here because everyone in the stadium knows he was safe
  • (A stadium call is when the umpire is loud and emphatic when they don't need to be - don't make stadium calls)

  • Note pause before the call
